Spiders, snakes and roaches!

January 26, 2015

Hola:
So this week has honestly been a little rough for me, but I feel like I’ve learned a lot from past experiences and I’ve been able to be more patient and stronger when dealing with trials. The week was starting fine on Monday.  The hermanas were in charge of the activity, so we played volleyball (to change it up a little from soccer) and then we made pizza with el Hermano F. who owns a bakery and makes delicious pizza! That evening when we were heading to a noche de hogar with a family, it was a little dark, and we found a snake in the road. I almost stepped on it, but my companion saw it and screamed and went running! Then I saw it and I just walked around it. I was like [hey, tranquila, no pasa nada]. When I caught up to my companion she was in hysterics, because she has never seen a snake before and it really scared her.  She walked the rest of the way clinging on to my arm, and I luckily had a little flashlight to light the way, so it was ok.  But it was so funny though.
Then things started to get worse on Tuesday when we moved.  We live with members. They have the same room where we are now right next door, and it’s just nicer because it has air conditioning and another sink, so we decided to move over to that room.  We pretty much moved everything over on Tuesday, and we finished on Wednesday.  When we got home Tuesday night there were 2 cockroaches! And on Wednesday night we found another cockroach and a huge centipede.  Thursday morning there was a giant GIGANTE spider in the bathroom.

We haven’t been able to have a lot of lessons this week. We have new investigadores that we’re really excited about and we had 4 come to church yesterday. Also we have Hermana R. who is 10 years old and her family are members. She was living with her mom in another area and her dad lives here. She’s now here and her dad wanted to be the one to baptize her, so we’re teaching her the lessons and she will be baptized the 7th of February. She is the sweetest little girl and has such a sincere testimony. Also this week we’ve had 2 noche de hogares with la Familia V. They are a less active family of 7 that are a humble family that live in humble circumstances, but are so great and make me remember that all we need to be happy is our family and the Gospel.  On Saturday we went to a baptism of the elders in our branch and an hermano was able to baptize his wife, and it was so tender.
I’m going to send this and then finish in another email because it’s raining super hard and I’m afraid the internet will go out.

Anyway, I am so grateful for this gospel and for these mission experiences.

Love you all,

Hermana Tijerino

It is hot in here. Wait, now it is raining...

Hola hola                                                                                                         January 19, 2015
This week has been a little crazy because of the weather.  One day it’s super-hot, and then the next it rains.  And then the next day it’s super-hot and then the next day it rains, ahh! But we’re surviving.  On Monday we played futbol (Soccer really), and it was super hilarious, and really good to unstress a little.  We also had a really good family home evening with our pensionista and her family and with a family of converts we invited. On Tuesday we were able to teach two investigadores, we have- Hermana C. and Hermana R.  Hermana C. has been investigating a while and wants to join the church, but she just doesn’t want to get married.  Hermana R. is a new investigator we found and she really sweet and humble.  She came to church last Sunday and really liked it.  On Wednesday we visited a few families that were baptized in the past year and are super great people.  On Thursday we had our zone meeting and we talked about what we learned in the meeting of leaders that we had with the president in Santa Cruz.

On Friday night we got home a little early because it was raining really hard, so we made popcorn and watched a church movie and had a little movie night.  On Saturday we went to the baptism of Hermana E.  She’s the one that Hermana B. and I started teaching and we set a baptism date for her and everything. The next day were cambios and I left that area.  So that made me sad, but I was super happy to still be able to see her baptism.  When we got to the church, she was coming out of the bathroom, and she was dressed in white, and that made me so happy to see her.  Really, such a joy every time I see someone that I’ve taught being baptized. But really I know that I had nothing to do with it.  She was prepared to receive us, and we arrived at her house just in the moment that she needed because it was her time.  It’s amazing to be able to see how God really prepares people to receive us and to receive the Gospel.  We’ve been able to find 3 new investigadores between this week and last week and I know that Heavenly Father is preparing these people.

On Saturday we made tacos with our pensionista and yesterday as well with another family, and they were super good.  My companion is from Guatemala and she knows how to make them a little different, but they were deeeelicious.  Anyway, I am so happy to be here in Cobija.  The area that I am in now is absolutely beautiful. It’s pure dirt roads and big hills and a lot of jungle.  And although sometimes the sun is really strong or the rain is pouring really hard, I look up and see the beauty around me and I know Heavenly Father loves me because he has put me here at this place and at this time.  I feel so grateful because it is so beautiful but it also kills me every day because I don’t have a camera to be able to capture it all.  But I will never forget the beauty that is Cobija.

Love you all,

Hermana Tijerino

Flying to Santa Cruz

January 12, 2015

So this was my week:
Monday we flew to Santa Cruz.  We got there in the afternoon and we went and ate Subway in the mission office.  Then we went to the house in Belen where we were staying (the area where I was before coming to Cobija) and then we went to email. We did a few things before going back to the house exhausted after traveling all day, (because we had a layover in La Paz).

On Tuesday we got up early to get ready to go to our meeting of leaders, which is why we went to Santa Cruz.  We had the meeting all morning and I learned a lot about how to be a good leader, and how to be an example to others.  Our example speaks louder than our words. The Mission President talked about what the Lord expects of our mission in 2015.  Also he announced a big change. There’s going to be a new mission in Bolivia.  La Paz Norte! Cobija, the area I am in now, will be part of that new mission.  But this change won’t occur until July, and by then I will be home. But it will be interesting because some of our missionaries will be transferred to the other mission. After the meeting we had lunch and then we had a lot to do.  We were able to access our other suitcases that we left in the mission home to get a few things. Then we went to the distribution center.

We visited a few people that my companion taught, and we went to La Plaza and had ice cream with the other hermanas that flew in from Trinidad.  That was really fun, but I got sick after so then we went home.  Wednesday morning we had to go to immigration at 6 in the morning because I’ve now been in Bolivia for over a year and I need to get my ID carnet.  After that we had to go the clinic because my companion needed to see the doctor.  We spent the rest of the day visiting the area Jardin, where both my companion and I were serving before. That was super fun and I got to see my converts there and it was so good to see everyone.  We also went to the grocery store to get stuff because here in Cobija there aren’t any.  Then since it was our last night in Santa Cruz we ordered pizza with the other hermanas, and that was super fun too.  We flew back to Cobija on Thursday and right when we got there we had to go to our district meeting. After lunch we slept for a little bit because we were so exhausted.

The trip was super fun and we did a lot.  Now the past couple of days have been back to normal and we’ve been able to visit and teach and it’s been good.  I want to write more but I’m out of time so that’s all for now.  I’m still loving Cobija although its sooooooo hot and there are a lot of bugs, pero vale la pena!

Con mucho amor,

Hermana Tijerino

Happy 2015 To All!

  January 5, 2015

Hola hola!

This week was crazy! Monday and Tuesday was chill.  Wednesday was New Year’s Eve and it was also cambios. That night we got the call for los cambios but I wasn’t expecting either of us to have transfers, but... I was transferred to Villa Cruz! It is still in Cobija but it’s in the area of the other hermanas.  I was super sad because I’ve come to love my area so much and the people and our investigadores and our Rama and I was super bummed.  But I´ll still be in Cobija and it’s a small ciudad so I know I´ll still see them.  We have church in the same capilla so I´ll see the members there too.  I was sad, but I am excited to get to know this area.  I’m now with Hermana C.  She´s from Guatemala and I met her in my first area in Jardin. We´ve been together here in Cobija so we´re good friends and I love her and I’m excited to be with her.  This area is a lot different though.  There are almost no paved roads and it’s all steep hills. There are hardly any buses so we have to walk everywhere and let’s just say I get a good workout every day.

Thursday on New Year’s Day, it was so silent and there were a lot of people passed out on the streets and people with hangovers and it was kind of funny.  We were like and this is why we don’t drink.  We went to the airport with Hermana D. to go to Santa Cruz and to pick up la compañera de Hermana B., who is la Hermana N. who I love! Then I went to my new area. We went to our pensionista’s house and helped them set up the house for una fiesta - la quinceañera de su hija.  Here they celebrate big the 15th birthday, and it was so pretty. Their house was filled with balloons and decorations and everything.  We worked hard on Friday and Saturday too. It rained super hard so we had to go out in boots because everything was mud.  Sunday was pretty good as well. La Hermana D. who was here before me was in this area 9 months! I was worried it was going to be hard to replace her, but so far it’s been ok.  Now my companion and I are the hermanas capacitadoras and we have our meeting of all the leaders tomorrow, so these next few days are going to be crazy.  This morning we flew to La Paz and then arrived here in Santa Cruz. We´ll be staying en la casa de Belen.  Tomorrow we have meetings all morning.  On Wednesday I have to go to immigration.  We´ll be coming home to Cobija on Thursday.  While we´re here my companion and I are hoping to visit people here in Belen and in Jardin because we were both in these areas. It will be an adventure! I’m really excited for this New Year and for new adventures.

This year 2015 will be a year full of changes.  I will be finishing my mission in May and then I will come home and then go back to BYU and I will continue with my life.  I´ve learned so much in this past year of 2014 and I couldn’t even begin to describe everything and all the experiences I´ve had.  But what I know is that I have strengthened my testimony so much and I’ve grown as a person and I am so grateful for my mission and for everything it has done for me and the people I´ve been able to meet and to serve.  I love Cobija and I’m excited to be here and to be able to have 4 more months of my mission.  Time is going by so fast! Ciao 2014 y hola 2015!

Con amor,

Hermana Tijerino

December 29, 2014 - All up to date

December 29, 2014

This week was Christmas and it was super good!
Monday was a normal p-day where we played futbol (Soccer, really) with our new soccer jerseys we had made for our zone, and then we went Christmas shopping to buy things for the families we are teaching.
Tuesday we had a servicio in the morning and we cleaned the house of the hermana T.  We went there the next day on Christmas Eve to make hot chocolate and empanadas for the activity of our branch. We spent hours getting everything ready and then we had the activity in the capilla and it turned out really nice.  At midnight when we were in bed we heard fireworks and music basically all night and we were like “Feliz Navidad!” and then Thursday it was Christmas Day! I woke up a little early so I could put a few presents and the card I made and a few things on my companion’s desk so when she woke up she would have gifts.   She opened those and I opened the gifts my parents sent and it was really nice.  We left early to go to the pensionista’s house of the other hermanas to make cinnamon rolls to take to the zone meeting.  We did that and they turned out super delicious.  The other hermanas actually prepared a huge breakfast and had a room decorated with a little paper fireplace and a stocking for each one of us and a table full of food, so that was really special.  I loved being able to spend Christmas with our zone.  And of course I got to call home and so I Skyped my family and it was really good to see all of them.  Also the Relief Society of the district prepared a dinner for all the missionaries at the church so we went to that in the evening, and it was really good as well.  So Christmas day was super good! Friday and Saturday things were back to normal a little and we were able to have lessons and teach our investigdora that we have that is super amazing Hermana E.  She came to church yesterday and is progressing a lot and we are so excited for her. That’s all I have time to write.
Hope you all had a great Christmas and have a great new year! I can’t believe it’s already going to be 2015! The time is going by too fast! I love the mission and I don’t want it to end! This year is going be crazy but I’m excited for the last couple months of my mission and we’ll see what’s prepared for me after.

Con amor,
Hermana Tijerino

December 22, 2014 - Almost all caught up

December 22, 2014

Hola todos!

Navidad has now approached! It’s so crazy the time has gone by super rapido! Last Monday I finally decorated our little apartment for Christmas.  I bought a Charlie brown size little Christmas tree and little ornaments and a gold star.  I made paper snowflakes from old pages of Liahona magazines, and a paper chain from old receipts.  I also bought a tiny nativity set… and a small elephant.  So, anyway it is super great.  Also on Monday the other hermanas in our zone planned a scavenger hunt in their area, and then we went to their pensionista’s house afterward and made pizza, so that was super fun.  Then on Tuesday we did a servicio there in their pensionista’s house and we painted where they are building more rooms, so that was really fun as well.  On Wednesday we had intercambios and I went with Hermana D. in her area. It was super fun.  She’s from LA, California, and her parents are Mexican. She already knew Spanish before her mission, she’s a convert to the church, and she’s awesome.  She was also studying English in college so we talked a lot about literature and poetry that we love, so it was really funny because it was so weird to remember that stuff.  I also realized I’ve forgotten so much! Then on Thursday we had a really good zone meeting and in the afternoon we had a really good lesson with one of our investigadoras, Hermana E.  She’s going through a divorce with her esposo, and we came at a time when she really needed us and we could feel the spirit so strong in the lesson. Please pray for her!

On Saturday we went to a baptism of the other hermanas and the zone leaders.  I love it here because when there is a baptism, all of the missionaries in the zone come.   Our zone is really unido and we’re all really good friends and I love it.  Anyway I’m super excited for Christmas! On Christmas Eve we’re going to have a branch activity and have hot chocolate and empanadas and watch a church movie and it should be really good.  Then on Christmas day; it is a Thursday so we’ll have a zone meeting and probably do something special.  And of course I’ll be able to call home, so that will be nice. Anyway I have lots of pictures I want to send as well so I’ll see if I can do that.  But I just want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas! And I hope that we can take the spirit of Christmas into our hearts and that we can remember Jesus Christ our Savior.

Con amor,
Hermana Tijerino

Yet another late update - December 15, 2014

December 15, 2014

Hola hola!

This week was pretty good, and I call it “animal week” because I saw all kinds of animals! At the beginning of the week we visited an hermana that lives in an area that is a little more in the jungle. She was telling us how every time it rains the snakes come out, and the other day she found one in her room. They took a picture of another that they found at the house and it was a HUGE boa.  We didn’t see any when we were there but then it started to rain a little so then we were like “ok, we have to go...”  When we did service on Wednesday we saw an ant eater! And another day when we were on the bus and we were at the stop light, there was a group gathered around the sidewalk and there we saw a SLOTH! It’s just normal here for there to be a sloth on the side of the road.  Then in another service project we had on Saturday there was a huge turtle.  I think that is it, but really you never know what you will find here! Also I think I’ve become an expert at killing spiders... who would have thought.
Anyway, my companion and I are doing really well.  We laugh a lot and have a lot of adventures.  I just found out though that the reason she doesn’t like Christmas is because they never celebrated it in her house.  They never had a tree, she never got presents, they never did anything, because they didn’t have a lot of money. She just feels sad because she doesn’t have any happy memories of Christmas and for all the people here that are really poor too. So we are trying to figure out what we can do. We are thinking of making hot chocolate and goodies to give out to people on Christmas Eve.  I’m going to buy gifts for the children of the families we’re teaching.  Anyway, we have a few families we are teaching that I really love.  Please pray for them.
I love seeing the Christmas trees in the homes and even though I’m not at home, I can feel the Christmas spirit when I’m with the people, when I look around at the lights and decorations and the beauty of the jungle around me, and when we’re teaching about the savior and when I read the scriptures. I encourage you all to think about the true meaning of Christmas and what brings the spirit to you and what are the things that are most important. For me, it’s family and love and giving and the power the gospel has to change lives and to make us happy. And trying to follow the example of our Savior by his service and love for all those around him.

Love you all,

Hermana Tijerino

December 8, 2015 - Another late update

December 8, 2014

Hola hola!
This week was really good and especially this weekend because the president and his wife came to Cobija! It’s kind of a big deal because we are so far away and he doesn’t come out very often, so it was really good.  They got here on Friday and we had our zone conference, and then he took us all out to our early Christmas dinner.  Saturday morning we had an activity with Hermana Zambrano and las hermanas of the Relief Society presidency.  We went out and visited the hermanas less actives.  In the afternoon we visited people and picked mangos off a tree and ate them with an hermana who is an older lady and so sweet! Then we went around and invited people to the district conference that we were going to have Saturday and Sunday (it’s like stake conference but here it’s a district because it’s so small). Then we went there in the evening and listened to a really good discurso by the presidente and he talked about how discouragement doesn’t come from God and it will diminish our faith. We talked about how we can strengthen our faith and get rid of discouragement and how we can live the gospel and be happy. He said something I really liked – “Ser feliz es una consecuencia de vivir el evangelio”, which means that being happy is the consequence of living the gospel.

On Sunday it was really good even though for the first half of the conference there wasn’t power so there wasn’t light and there wasn’t a microphone and there wasn’t air conditioning and there were MUCHAS personas in a small chapel, so everyone was dying. But then the power came on and there was aire!! The presidente talked about reverence and how reverence leads to receiving revelation.  Later in the afternoon we had our interviews with presidente and he talked to all of us (there are 14 missionaries here in our zone de Cobija).  He told us how really he trusts us, because we’re so far from Santa Cruz, that we’re all here for a reason, and that we have a responsibility to help build up the church in this pueblo.  I really do feel so lucky because it’s the jungle and it’s beautiful.  But don’t get me wrong, it is hard too, because it’s basically the hottest place in all Bolivia and we’re away from all the other missionaries. But also it’s great because I love our zone and we’re like a small little family here and I love it.   Presidente y Hermana Zambrano are on their way back to Santa Cruz and we’ve all been nourished and strengthened and ready to work and to share the gospel with these people and help them come unto Christ, especially in this season of Christmas.  If you havent seen this video yet, go and watch it: http://www.mormon.org/christmas  He is the Gift :)

Love you all, con mucho amor

Hermana Tijerino

December 1, 2014 - Late update.

December 1, 2014

Hola mis queridos hermanos y hermanas,

Ok, I am so in love with Cobija.  This area is really so beautiful! The internet is slow so you’ll have to excuse my lack of grammar but I love it here.  It’s just SUPER HOT!  It’s a kind of heat and humidity that I’ve never experienced before, and that makes it a little draining, but really it’s been good.  And in the little time I’ve been here I’ve gotten tan a lot.

Last Monday we played football (soccer for those of you in the northern hemisphere) in a cancha that is literally surrounded by jungle and it’s GORGEOUS.  Then on Tuesday we went and did service in the area of the other hermanas. We helped clear out an area here where a family is going to build their house. It’s on a hill overlooking the rio and the green green jungle of Brazil and it’s so pretty! I really want to take pictures of everything! On Wednesday we did service as well in a different area. We burned piles of wood that we had cleared away also for another family that’s going to build their house there.  This is really what people do to live. They buy a lot of land that’s usually jungled and then they have to clear it away with machetes and then they burn it and level it out so they can construct their little wood house, porque ASI ES LA VIDA. People are so hard working and self sufficient and it really amazes me.  Thursday was Thanksgiving and the hermanas and I made the pumpkin cookies from the package my mom sent me. We brought them to our district meeting for the zona, and also the zone leaders bought us salteñas which were super good. So that is basically what I ate for Thanksgiving. For lunch we usually just eat rice and chicken, or noodles or potatoes, and some kind of meat.  Fruits and veggies here are really expensive and most people can’t afford them.

On Thanksgiving we shared a message about gratitude to the people we visited that day. I was able to think and reflect about all of the things I am grateful for and the list is long! I am grateful for all of the luxuries that I had at home and for the experience I’ve been able to have to live among these amazing people here in Bolivia.  But more than anything I’ve realized that the material things don’t really matter so much. What is more importante is our families and loved ones and this glorious gospel that allows us to be happy and to know that we are children of God here on this earth to learn and to grow and to prepare to return to live with Him.   I’m so grateful for my mission and for everything I’m learning and for the people I’m meeting and serving and for what they have done for me. To see the faith of such humble people has changed me in ways I couldn’t have imagined and I know they will always be in my heart.  The people in this area are really great although we don’t have a lot of people that are progressing, but we have a family where the parents are less active and there’s a boy that is 9 years old that we have his baptism planned for Christmas.  He is honestly the cutest little boy ever and said the most sincere and precious prayer.  I’m also grateful for children and for the example they are to us of being so close to Christ.

Saturday we also had another service project.  Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday morning we have service, which is awesome.  My companion and I have been working hard and trying to withstand the heat and everything’s good, just MUCHO CALOR. It’s been raining on and off, so you just have to be prepared.  Today I’m hoping that we can buy some things to be able to decorate for Christmas because oh my goodness it’s already December! Hope you are all doing well.

Thanks for everything.

Con mucho amor,
Hermana Tijerino
